The GLK-Class competes with the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Acura RDX, Infiniti EX, Lexus RX, and Land Rover LR2.
Along with the new design, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class gets two new engines. The rear-wheel-drive GLK350 and all-wheel-drive GLK350 4MATIC are both powered by a 3.5-liter direct-injection V6 gasoline engine that makes 302 horsepower (34 more than the last generation) and 273 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes-Benz estimates the 0-60 mph time for the GLK350 to be only in 6.5 seconds. The new engine uses auto stop/start technology designed to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions in city driving. A four-cylinder diesel engine will make its debut on the GLK250 BlueTEC model, with 190 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. All 2013 GLK-Class models will come with a 7-speed automatic transmission.
New headlights, chrome-framed LED daytime running lights and a chrome-trimmed grille give the GLK-Class a look more in line with the rest of the Mercedes-Benz family. In back are new taillights, a new bumper, a chrome skidplate and chrome-plated tailpipe trim.
Inside is a redesigned dashboard, including a new color instrument cluster display, round air vents and extensive use of wood trim. A 5.8-inch color display is standard, with a larger, 7-inch display optional. The latter includes rearview camera, navigation and Mercedes-Benz's COMAND user interface.
But this small crossover isn't just at home on suburban streets. Mercedes-Benz execs stress that the GLK-Class was redesigned with off-road capabilities in mind. Approach and departure angles and ground clearance were engineered to ensure the vehicle could handle pavement departures.
Standard features on all models will include 19-inch wheels, power adjustable seats, dual-zone automatic climate control with dust filter, leather-wrapped steering wheel with multi-function controls and shift paddles, as well as new upholstery colors and seat designs. The standard audio system is a six-speaker setup with single CD player and Bluetooth. Options will include Active Parking Assist, a full Leather Seating package with interior ambient lighting using LED fiber-optic technology, and an AMG exterior styling package for the even-more image conscious, which includes unique 20-inch alloy wheels, a chrome-trimmed grille, LED daytime running lights, aluminum roof rails and front and rear AMG skirts. Other add-ons include a Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system and a Lane Tracking package, which bundles a plethora of electronic safety features including features including blind spot detection and lane departure warning.
