2012 Nissan Rogue Review - If it's not broken, why fix it? That's what Nissan thinks when it came to the 2012 Rogue compact crossover. After going through several style changes and receiving a nose job in 2011, Nissan is happy with the results and not much changes for the 2012 model year. Like last year's model, the Rogue has solid underpinning and performs just as well in light off-roading as it does on pavement. Nissan's C platform is used for both the Rogue and Sentra and gives the Yokohama-based automaker a fighting chance against tough competition from the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Meant to be a sporty alternative in the compact-crossover class, the Rogue offers a car-like ride and handling. A 2.5-liter 170-horsepower I-4 mated to a continuously variable transmission powers the Rogue while vented brakes in the front and rear bring it to a stop. Stability traction control is a standard feature while an all-wheel drive is available. A Special Edition trim is new for 2012.

What's New

After being refreshed in 2011, the Rogue adds a Special Edition model for 2012, along with new content for the different option packages. A new "Sport Mode" switch has been added to all models while new 17-inch wheels come on the SV and 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels come with the Special Edition. The Around View Monitor has been added onto the SL Package making the Rogue the first non-luxury vehicle in the U.S. to offer this.

Exterior

With an exterior that was reshaped last year to give the Rogue a more refined and aerodynamic look; it is one of the longest SUVs in its class. Built on Nissan's C-platform, the Rogue measures 182.9-inches with a 105.9-inch wheelbase. The Rogue is offered in two models, the S and SV, along with a special edition Rogue S Krom adding a different dimension to regular "ho-hum" compact sport utility vehicles. There are new wheel styles this year whether you choose 16- or 17-inch alloys.

Interior

All the features we have come to expect in a vehicle are present in the Rogue. A spacious interior includes a long list of standard and available equipment including available Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, XM Satellite Radio and an in-dash 5-inch touch screen navigation system with XM NavTraffic and USB input for iPod and other compatible devices. The XM services require a subscription and is sold separately. A standard drive computer includes displays for distance-to-empty, average fuel consumption, average speed, elapsed time and outside temperature. Available steering wheel-mounted controls include audio, Bluetooth and cruise control (cruise control is standard on all models). Available in upgraded cloth or leather-trimmed seats, the 60/40-split fold-down rear seats fold down providing excess cargo space. A rear cargo organizer is available along with the standard 58 cubic-feet of cargo space makes it easy to transport goods. Heated seats and a Bose audio system with seven speakers gives the Rogue some extra thump at the driver's discretion.

Performance & Handling

The 2.5L I-4 makes an appearance in the 2012 model just as it did the previous year and pushes out 175 horsepower. All Rogue models are available in all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive configurations. Mated to a continuously variable transmission Nissan aimed to achieve a more spirited ride without budging on fuel economy. A manual transmission is also an available option. The Rogue rides on front strut/rear multi-link suspension while electric power steering is standard.

Safety

The Rogue has front, front-side, and curtain airbags the last for outboard occupants in both rows. It also gets traction and electronic stability control as
