2013 Chevrolet Malibu 2.5L Harga & Review

Posted by Edo Suseno Kamis, 02 Agustus 2012 0 komentar
2013 Chevrolet Malibu 2.5L - Redesigned for 2013, the new Malibu has crisp styling inside and out. It’s marginally smaller than before and the V-6 option is gone; a 220-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine replaces the six. Base versions will have the option of a “light” hybrid powertrain that boosts fuel economy slightly.
2013 Chevrolet Malibu 2.5L

The naturally aspirated 2.5L will have 197-hp and 191 lb-ft of torque, which is 28-hp more than the previous four-cylinder Malibu. In fact, the powerplant only has a mere 3-hp less than the Cadillac ATS. The 2.5L four-cylinder is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The more powerful of the two powerplants is the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that pumps out 259-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. This is a slight increase over the outgoing V6 Malibu that had 252-hp, but should be fairly quicker thanks to the aid of a turbo. Chevy currently claims that the Malibu turbo will hit 60-mph in just 6.3 seconds. Just like the 2.5L engine, the 2.0L turbo also has a six-speed automatic transmission.
No fuel economy figures have been released, but it’s safe to assume the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder will not only be more powerful than the outgoing V6, but have better fuel efficiency.

2012 Chevrolet Malibu Reviews

Posted by Edo Suseno Rabu, 25 April 2012 0 komentar
2012 Chevrolet Malibu Reviews - Chevrolet has revamped its bread-and-butter Malibu mid-size sedan for the latest model year, giving it a fresh look inside and out while also offering an efficient new Malibu Eco mild hybrid model. Though slightly shorter than its predecessor, the new Malibu hardly gives up any space inside and gains more responsive handling thanks in part to its smaller size.

2012 Chevrolet Malibu

What’s under the hood?
A noteworthy change comes from Chevrolet now that we have confirmed the Bow Tie brand will drop the low-volume V6 currently offered in the Malibu in favor of a Hyundai Sonata -inspired four-cylinder-only lineup.

The new entry-level 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine comes sporting a dual overhead cam setup with direct injection. This engine is good for a healthy 197 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. The V6 replacing-motor is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that produces 259 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both mills will come with a standard six-speed automatic transmission.

The EPA has yet to test either of these new four-pots, and Chevy is remaining mum and not even offering estimated fuel economy at this time. Despite the obvious moves towards efficiency, Chevy promises that the all-new Malibu will deliver “precise ride and handling,” which it says has been engineered to be best-in-class – even going as far as to suggest that it will match more expensive sports sedans.

What’s inside?
One of the strong points of GM’s newest sedan is a compelling interior, complete with a blend of metallic, chrome and wood surfaces throughout the cabin. The stylization accents range from bits on the shifter, center stack, instrument cluster, steering wheel and the doors. The car’s party piece arrives in the form of a trick fold-out screen, a first of this type in a GM product, and first in any U.S. midsize car.

That same folding seven-inch screen will come with Chevy’s new infotainment system, MyLink, which allows for Pandora streaming radio and Stitcher SmartRadio, as well as Bluetooth and other technologies.

Interior lighting is anything but scarce, and Ice Blue is the order of the day – ranging from gauge cluster displays to accent lighting that stretches throughout and across the cabin.

Safety counts in family sedans
GM knows that safety is paramount in any vehicle, particularly one that will likely be used to haul families around town and across country, and as such, the Malibu comes packed with an array of technology aimed at keeping its occupants safe. Both the driver and front passenger, in the event of an accident, will find themselves cocooned in dual-stage air bags, pelvic/thorax side-impact airbags and even knee airbags.

There are also roof air bags that offer rollover protection, and Chevy will offer available second-row pelvic/thorax side-impact airbags, a lane departure warning system with forward collision alert and an available rearview camera system. Of course, OnStar with Automatic Crash Response is also included, and now boasts improved voice recognition technology, as well as a myriad of improvements aimed at ease of use rather than safety concerns.

Size matters
Among the extensive list of changes is a 4.5-inch shorter wheelbase, as well as a 62-inch track width that is just over 2 inches wider than the outgoing model. The end result is a more sporting platform that aims to deliver on Chevy’s promise for a sporty driving dynamic.

Key Competitors
Among the many competitors to the Malibu include its cross-town rivals, the Ford Fusion and Chrysler 200, as well as the thoughtfully designed Honda Accord. ReadmoreView Photo Gallery

2012 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS Convertible, an Autoweek Drivers Log Car Review

Posted by Edo Suseno Sabtu, 05 November 2011 0 komentar
2012 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS Convertible, an Autoweek Drivers Log Car Review - The biggest question is, would someone lay out 43 large for a Camaro? That's approaching Chevrolet Corvette territory in my book. On the other hand, you're getting a Vette engine (the LS3), to the tune of 6.2 liters and 426 hp. Blasting into open spaces and carving up traffic is no trouble. The six-speed is an eager partner, and the shifts are quick and easy. The steering is a touch light but offers more than adequate response.
I found the chassis to be sporty and stiff but not abusive. Overall, I grade this Camaro a touch ahead of the Ford Mustang GT convertible that we had in the fleet recently. It's purely my opinion, but the Chevy has more gravitas and is a touch more refined. The Mustang is buffer and even more athletic in corners, but in a purely subjective matter, the bow-tie muscle car was the most fun for me.
I was impressed with the details of the SS stitching and light pipes on the door panels, but as for the ragtop--not so much. It rattled and blew on the expressway and seemed to take a while to open and close. Still, it's a convertible, so that's a fair tradeoff. The Camaro SS is a blast. It has some faults, but they don't outweigh the fun factor.

ASSOCAITE EDITOR JAKE LINGEMAN:
Greg, I completely disagree. The faults of the Camaro SS convertible far outweigh the fun factor.
First, look at the curb weight of this hippo--more than 4,100 pounds! Those 426 horses feel more like 326. A sports car should shoot for about 3,000 pounds, and then hit a little higher because of safety concerns. The regular SS Camaro weighs about 3,900, which is still heavy, but it makes up a little in stiffness. This thing wobbles all over the broken pavement. For comparison, the Ford Mustang GT coupe weighs 3,600 and the drop-top comes in at just more than 3,700 with a manual transmission.
It's also too expensive. More than 40 grand seems crazy for this kind of performance. As Greg said, a few (seven) grand more and you can be in a Vette, where 426 hp feels like 500 hp. Or you can grab a Mustang for less.
All that being said, the drop-top Camaro is a sharp-looking ride. The seats feel good and the SS stitching in the headrests is pretty cool.
The body looks good, too, as long as the top is down. Almost all convertibles seem (to me) like they were designed without a top in mind. Once one is put on, the lines are all thrown off.
I feel as I could find a better way to spend $40,000, even if it has to be a convertible.

ROAD TEST EDITOR JONATHAN WONG:
I guess I get to be the tiebreaker on this 2012 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS convertible. Before I do that, I want to point out the subtle differences on this 2012 version of the Camaro convertible, which just came out for 2011.
For starters, the soft insert on the dash is new. On base models, it's cloth and for uplevel models like the 2LT and this 2SS, it's vinyl. Now instead of the Camaro's dashboard looking like a giant plastic log, it's appears a touch more upscale and not so inexpensive. In addition, the instrument panel was reworked with easier-to-read graphics. Also gone is the oddly shaped and deeply dished steering wheel, replaced with a wheel that feels much more comfortable in your hands. I'm pretty sure it's the same steering wheel found in the Chevrolet Equinox, but that's fine with me. Heck, the Corvette still has the steering wheel from the Cobalt, right? OK, that's not cool, but moving on.
Jake pointed out exactly what I was thinking after driving the 2011 version of this convertible: It's substantially heavier than the Ford Mustang convertible. Part of that is because the Camaro is just heavy to begin with, but then Chevy had to beef up the chassis in key areas to make up for the missing fixed roof. For starters, there is a shock-tower brace under the hood, the transmission support was made stronger, the driveshaft tunnel was stiffened and rear underbody braces were added.
However, I think this Camaro convertible handles itself real well around town. In fact, it's better than the Mustang drop-top, in my opinion. The suspension is unchanged from the coupe, so it's soft and rolls around corners, which isn't great if you intend to do some corner carving, but it's good if you just want to roll around town and enjoy a nice summer or fall night. The latter is what most convertible shoppers are looking for. With the SS you have 6.2-liter V8 with 426 hp on tap to slingshot you away from a stoplight, and that's most likely what a typical Camaro convertible owner's performance driving will be.
Here are some other driving observations: Steering feel and response is numb, the six-speed manual's shifter isn't as precise as I would like it, the brake pedal is squishy but there is confident stopping power and the engine packs plenty of power for this car's purposes. If you want more power, then the ZL1 convertible is on its way.
If you're looking for a convertible cruiser and want to get noticed, this Camaro fits the bill perfectly. If you want your drop-top to have a more inspiring drive quality, then I would tell you to go with the Ford.
So is this Chevy convertible worth it? I'm going to say yes for the vast majority of open-top shoppers.

Hottest New Small Cars for 2012

Posted by Edo Suseno Selasa, 01 November 2011 0 komentar
Hottest New Small Cars for 2012 - The web site AutoTrader.com reports that some of the biggest recent gains in consumer interest have been around new 2012 small-car models from Chevrolet, Hyundai and Fiat — as well as the redesigned Volkswagen Beetle.

“In the past, small cars didn’t fare very well with American shoppers, as many of the available options were considered cheap and lacking in features,” says Rick Wainschel, vice president of automotive insights at AutoTrader. “However, the small cars being produced today are exciting, fun to drive and fuel-efficient.”

Small cars introduced in 2011, such as the Ford Fiesta and Chevrolet Cruze, have already been selling well. And Chevrolet has just announced plans for an urban minicar called the Spark in 2013, which will have both gasoline and all-electric versions.

But here’s a closer look at the 2012 small-car models that already are sparking consumer interest.

Volkswagen Beetle

The classic model has gotten another new look: Volkswagen gave the 2012 Beetle its first redesign since 1998. The top is now flatter and the hood longer — this car is wider, lower and longer, as VW targets more male buyers. (About 60% of Beetle buyers have been women.)

In addition to new look, the Beetle has gotten a 200-horsepower four-cylinder turbocharged engine with strong acceleration — another bid for male drivers. Reviewers (mostly male) have applauded the addition of this option and praise the power and handling.

The turbo is rated for 22 MPG city, 30 highway. List price on the Beetle ranges from $18,995 for the base model to $23,395 for the turbo version. The 2012 Beetle does not yet have crash test ratings.

Fiat 500

Fiat, now the majority owner of Chrysler, has brought in the popular 500 from Europe and is selling the model through some established Chrysler dealers.

Fun to look at and fun to drive — at least around town and on curvy back roads — the 500 shows its sharp handling on winding roads, although its 101-horsepower, four-cylinder engine (rated 30 mpg city, 38 highway) leaves it feeling a little underpowered.

I only gave it a quick test drive, but other reviewers say that in high-speed interstate driving, the ride is occasionally bumpy and there’s some road noise — making the 500 a better choice for owners who drive shorter distances.

Despite its small size, the 500 got a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Fiat 500 even has cute names for its different versions: The Pop starts at $15,500, the Sport at $17,500 and the Lounge at $19,500.

Chevrolet Sonic

Chevrolet’s lowest-priced small car, the Sonic, is a sportier-looking and better-performing replacement for the Aveo. And it has a distinction that will matter to many buyers: It is the only subcompact made in the USA under an agreement with the United Auto Workers.

Reviewers praise the Sonic as fun to drive and a worthy competitor to chief rivals Ford Fiesta and Honda Fit. You can get the Sonic in either sedan or hatchback versions, both of which were rated a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The four-cylinder, 135 horsepower engine is rated at 25 MPG in city driving and 35 on the highway. The Sonic base model starts at $13,735 and ranges up to $18,495 for its top-end version.

Hyundai Veloster

The Veloster features the same two attributes that have powered Hyundai’s recent U.S. success: eye-catching styling and high mileage ratings.

Reviewers praise its quirky exterior design and its comfortable, upscale-seeming interior. Though styled as a coupe, the Veloster has a full-size third door on the passenger side for access to the not-too-roomy back seat. The four-cylinder 148-horsepower engine is rated at 28 mpg in city driving, 40 highway. The downside: Test drivers say that with its focus on high MPG, the Veloster fails to offer a peppy, fun-to-drive experience (like, say, a Mini Cooper).

The Veloster has one price level — $17,300 — but can range up to $18,550 with options like navigation and rear-view safety camera. The Veloster does not yet have crash test ratings.

740-hp German Sports Car with GM Roots

CCG customGT
740-hp German Sports Car with GM Roots - According to CCG, the customGT life begins in the good ol’ USA where the frame is produced. The material used is either fiberglass or carbon-fiber-reinforced composites, depending on how the car is ordered. The body is fine-tuned at CCG’s shop and the overall curb weight ranges from 2249 to 3120 pounds, depending on equipment.
Next up are a two engine choices sourced from General Motors and the Corvette. First up is the LS3, 6.2-liter, V-8-engine tuned to 450 hp. Second is the LS7 engine found in the Corvette Z06. For the custom GT, the 7.0-liter, V-8 is tuned to put out 550 hp with a turbocharged option that boosts power up to 740 hp. Both engines come standard with a six-speed manual and customers have the option to custom select their gear ratios. A six-speed sequential gearbox is also available.
CCG states that the customGT will scoot from 0-62 mph in just 3.3 seconds when powered by the 7.0-liter engine. We assume that time was achieved with the optional turbochargers, since it wasn’t stated in the press release. According to CCG, the powerful and brash powertrain “screams its joie de vivre out of exhaust pipes that are as thick as a man’s arm.” Okay then.
The American and French influence stops there, as the remainder of the components are German, including KW suspension parts, MOV’IT brakes (six-piston calipers up front; four-piston calipers in back). CCG also states that the customGT can be made to run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), which is eco-friendly, more fuel efficient, and growing in popularity in Europe. Next up on the horizon is a competition model, which will feature a lighter curb weight, special engine mapping, and racing brake.
For now, the customGT can be yours — provided you live in Europe and have 113.000,00 euros ($158,923 with today’s rates) to spend.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco - Prototype Drive Review - Hard to believe, but what we have here is the eighth-generation Malibu, a car on sale 35 years and, uh, spanning six decades. It has historically been a kind of peripatetic approximation of Midwestern mobile civility—here today, gone tomorrow, then suddenly back again—and it was surely facing another passenger-pigeon demise when GM startlingly imbued the Malibu with all of the stellar credentials found in its sister, the Saturn Aura. Faster than we could say, “GM did what?” the previous-gen Malibu landed on our 2008 10Best list.
The first of the brand-new Malibus, slated to appear in the spring of 2012, is the Eco, featuring GM’s “light electrification of a traditional powertrain,” a.k.a. eAssist. GM doesn’t want us calling it a hybrid, although “hybrid” sure rolls off the tongue easier than “light electrification.” The system includes an all-in-one motor/generator that replaces the alternator, connected to 32 lithium-ion cells jammed into a 65-pound battery pack located aft of the rear seat. Via a rubber belt, the electric motor/generator—built in China, with no permanent magnets—contributes a bonus 15 horses to the crankshaft, mostly under wide-open throttle. Fun fact: The belt has a duty life of 75,000 miles. The Eco’s gas engine displaces 2.4 liters and produces 182 horsepower. Combined, engine and motor are expected to deliver 26 mpg in the city and 38 on the highway. We shall see.
Next summer, the more traditional gas-only Malibus will arrive—LS, LT, and LTZ—and they’ll all be powered by a brand-new 2.5-liter Ecotec producing an estimated 190 ponies. If so, that’s a healthy 21-hp nudge beyond the Malibu’s existing inline-four. By the way, GM is so certain you’re freaked out over fuel prices that no V-6 will be offered. That’s a bold wager.
We didn’t drive a Malibu with the new engine. It wasn’t ready. Nor was GM positive about its power output. Nor of its fuel economy, although “more than 30 mpg highway” was a stated goal. Instead, what we drove was a preproduction Malibu Eco with 17-inch tires and an LTZ-level cabin that wasn’t finished. Price? GM didn’t know that, either. Hey, sometimes you make the trailer for a movie before you make the movie, okay?
The Malibu’s upscale cabin remains upscale, awash in contrasting colors and classy stitching, as well as so-called basketball graining, which sounds awful but contributes to dimension and depth. So, too, do new decorative lateral dashboard “vanes” that glow with ice-blue ambient lighting. The radio’s touch screen cleverly flips up to reveal a six-inch-deep bin that’s big enough to swallow a cell phone and abag of Fritos. The front seat cushions are firm and nicely scalloped. For two folks, back-seat comfort is excellent, with the Malibu’s wider front and rear tracks resulting in a 3.2-inch gain in shoulder room.
On GM’s ride-and-handling track in Milford, Michigan, what we first noticed is that the new Malibu is extraordinarily quiet, that its structure feels even more solid than before, and that you can’t feel the electric motor kicking on or off. The ride is firm but appropriate to the market, and body motions are adequately damped. At light throttle, there’s no telling how many cylinders are at play. At rest, there are supposed to be zero cylinders at play, thanks to the automatic stop-start function, but our test car never turned itself off. Under WOT, the Ecotec still evinces a high-frequency thrum that lays bare its humble four-ishness, and it will be thrumming aplenty because this new Malibu feels heavy, asking for a lot of throttle to get out of the blocks. How heavy? GM doesn’t know that, either. Or at least isn’t telling. The car certainly feels no quicker to 60 mph than the 8.7 seconds required for the Malibu LT we sampled in March 2008. Anyone yet pining for the abandoned V-6’s 252 horses?
The Malibu’s ZF electrically assisted power steering is low on feedback, but the weighting is fine and so is tracking. Here’s good news: The regenerative braking that helps charge the batteries reveals itself not at all in pedal feel. No pulses, no soft spots—just firm, linear travel. Here’s bad news: The battery pack rests between the rear wheel wells and is cooled by a fan in the rear parcel shelf. It draws air from the cockpit. What with all of its tubes and snorkels, the thing reduces trunk space by two cubic feet, though the useful space is still one cubic foot larger than the 2012 Malibu’s. What’s more, the fan emits a jet-like whoosh when the engine is stoked with major throttle. Rear passengers will ask, “Are we taking off now?” At least front passengers can’t hear it.
Every Malibu is equipped with a Hydra-Matic 6T40 with a manual shift mode that is operated via a squishy rocker atop the shift knob. It would be a lot more convenient to bang away at the whole shift lever, but maybe Malibu drivers view that as hostile.
GM plans to sell the new Malibu on six continents, assembling it in four factories: two in the U.S., one in China, and one in South Korea. The car certainly looks the part with its bulked-up, I’m-about-to-pop-a-vein muscularity. Yet it boasts a Cd of 0.29, down from the previous Malibu’s 0.35, a huge gain.
Of course, don’t take any of this too seriously. We drove the Malibu Eco maybe 10 miles on the very test track where it was developed. It ought to feel good there, right?
As you read the following sentence, mimic Alec Baldwin’s deepest, darkest, most threatening voice, as if he’s narrating the trailer for an action movie: “In a world gone mad with power, there’s one Malibu, a Malibu that runs deep and won’t have a V-6 and doesn’t know anyone in Malibu. It’s a Malibu that’s ready for action—quiet action—from Muskegon to Miami but mostly in Muskegon. And if it doesn’t advance the chains as far down America’s sidelines as its predecessor, neither does it fumble. It’s your Malibu—America’s Malibu—but also China’s Malibu. Jeepers.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco - Prototype Drive Review

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco - Prototype Drive Review - Quicker? Yes. More sophisticated? Yes. More fun in a hairpin? Yes. Is the new BMW M5 what we’re accustomed to expect from BMW’s M division? Um, well, as we discovered during a session in southern Spain, the future of M is big, blustery, red-hot, torque-gushing turbos fitted to smaller engines with mass-production roots. The days of bespoke, high-revving track-bred screamers under the hoods of hopped-up BMWs are probably over. Is this a bad thing? We’re not sure yet.
This fifth-generation M5, known internally as the F10, is due to arrive in the U.S. late next summer, likely as a 2013 model and at an expected base price of about $90,000. BMW wants this M5 to be more flexible and everyday drivable. So those hoping for a twitchier, more-involving adrenaline generator than the outgoing E60 M5 might go away disappointed. The M5 remains unapologetically a heavyweight, an executive express, a velvet-wrapped hammer, a shark in whale’s clothes that should bolt its comfortably well-off owner to 60 mph in 3.8 or so seconds, roughly a half-second quicker than the old M5 with the SMG single-clutch automated manual. It might not be a four-door Elise, but this new M5 can scoot.
We further estimate that the M5 will rocket over a quarter-mile of pavement in a hair over 12 seconds when using the automatic gearbox’s launch-control system, which shaves a little time by dropping the clutch at about 3000 rpm and shifting for you. Radially mounted six-piston front monoblock Brembo calipers on drilled bimetal rotors with iron discs and aluminum hats scrub speed quickly, although the M5 is saddled with a couple hundred more pounds than before. (Despite employing aluminum doors and an aluminum hood, the new M5’s mass creeps to 4300 or so pounds.) So it might not eclipse its predecessor’s 158-foot 70-mph-to-0 braking figure.
Hydraulic Steering Is Better, but Not Perfect
As is the M way, all that performance is disguised by rather understated mods to the basic 5-series, including squarer front and rear fascias, the requisite four tailpipes, new sill skirts, a trunk wing, fender vents, and special 19-inch wheels (20s are optional). Inside, there are a thousand buttons and dancing needles and digital readouts, including a head-up display projected on the windshield that disappears if you wear polarized sunglasses. Upholstery is a sea of stitched leather, and the rest is soft-touch plastic accented by an unusual band of vertical-striped metal trim that recalls the corrugated roof of a Quonset hut.
In the new M5, you cannot select a gear, push a pedal, or turn the wheel without assistance from the many watchful computers monitoring your every bodily twitch. BMW goes to lengths to make the electronic layer between you and the machine transparent, or at least subject to an off button, and it is largely successful. But a slight fog of artificiality remains, especially in the steering, converted from electric assist in the base 5-series models to a more-natural-feeling hydraulic boost in the M5.
Smokes If You Got ’Em
Thanks to the M5’s sharper camber and caster settings, the helm quickly executes your commands and does everything you could desire—everything, that is, except talk back with those little organic tugs and sags that make lively cars feel, well, alive. But the suspension of forged control arms, links, and knuckles, which share virtually no part numbers with the current 550i, is more neutral than the old M5’s and more easily and progressively throttle-steered through corners. It may be heavier, but the new M5 felt lighter on its feet at the 3.4-mile Ascari circuit south of Seville, pea-shooting from corner to corner with blazing power, turning in smartly without noticeable roll in the body or squish-down in the tires, and then oozing out in one long, lurid, controllable drift.
Along with three driver-selectable stability-control modes, three settings for throttle response, three firmness levels for the shocks, and three shift-speed options, the have-it-your-way M5 offers you three steering modes, which progressively reduce boost. With Mercedes improving its game in this department, especially on the new CLS, we think Benz and BMW are going to meet in a middle that feels an awful lot like the new M5.
Power delivery from the 560-hp, 4360-cc twin-turbo V-8—yes, 560 horses from only 266 cubic inches—is a blast, literally, from about 1500 rpm to 6000, during which the two Honeywell turbines nestled into the valley of the engine block blow their strongest breezes. There’s so much torque steaming aft that, even with an electronically locked clutch-plate differential and larger 295/35 Michelin Pilot SuperSport rear tires, the back end easily breaks grip from a standstill under wide-open acceleration.
The tach needle will swing all the way to 7200 before it hits red, but it doesn’t need to. The stated reason for the 4.4’s lofty redline is track lappers who might want to hold gears longer, but we suspect the real reason is to pay tribute to M’s heritage of lofty top ends. The old E60’s V-10 spun to 8250. In this engine, Elvis pretty much leaves the building at 6000 rpm, and he shuffles out quietly, as the engine’s fierce guttural blat is heavily muffled by the turbos.
Manual Transmission in Limbo?
Dubbed the S63 TU for “technical update,” the oddly configured “reverse flow” V-8—in which the intake manifolds feed from the outside and the exhaust exits into the vee—has large and small changes from the S63 in the BMW X5 M and X6 M. The basics remain the same, but BMW’s throttleless Valvetronic induction control is deployed on the S63 TU, as are larger turbos and intercoolers, different injectors and control electronics, and a higher compression ratio of 10.0:1.
The power delivery is—dare we say it—almost diesel-like. Sure, it revs faster and sounds a lot better than any diesel, and the delivery is lumpier as the boost comes on or blows off, but the S63 TU’s 502 lb-ft reach full force just off idle at 1500 rpm and stay until 5750 rpm, figures that would make Herr Diesel blush. The Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, a reinforced version of the M3’s optional unit, is geared tall, with a double overdrive and a 3.15:1 final drive, to save fuel and take advantage of the engine’s power curve, or relative lack of curve, as it were. We’ve been told that the U.S. will again get a six-speed stick-shift manual, but officials at our drive weren’t willing to confirm the plan.
“There are days you can hear it clear across the Atlantic Ocean: ‘We need a manual transmission!’ ” says Albert Biermann, vice-president of engineering for BMW’s M division. “Some days the guys in Munich hear it, some days not.” Solution: Scream louder.
One thing BMW did hear were the complaints about the E60’s small fuel tank. The F10’s holds an additional 2.6 gallons, or 21.1 in total. When EPA testing is completed next year, average mileage could land somewhere in the low 20s, we’re told, a substantial gain over that of the old M5 automatic, which was rated at 11 mpg city/17 highway.
The M5 is a quantifiably superior car to its predecessor. Some things can’t be quantified, however, such as the sublime joy of a sky-high redline and the sound of an expensive precision instrument winding up to reach it. And therein lies BMW’s conundrum, and ours. We’re all for more-efficient, more-powerful torque monsters, but perhaps not at the expense of personality.
